TALES OF A CITY (1999)
TM commission written by Goran Stefanovski
Original live music by Xun Yin Dong
Written in the aftermath of the siege of Sarajevo, Tales of a City celebrates the importance of a place to belong.
This collaboration with Macedonian Goran Stefanovski, leading writer of former Yugoslavia, was our response to the Balkan crisis. What could we, based here in the UK, usefully contribute?
In devising the play we explored stories from individual company actors whose personal histories spanned times of upheaval in Somalia, Northern Ireland, China, East Germany and the 'Warsaw ghetto'. Following a time of intense media coverage, we quickly discarded any attempt at a drama-documentary style. Instead we created a montage of image and text that could move swiftly between war torn Sarajevo and a no-hope hostel 'somewhere in the UK'.
Many moving moments... precious seconds of normal life snatched against an ever present background of fear are brushed in with a delicate wash of melancholy joy...
